What is a coffee house?

How does the Freshwater Anthology work?

How does the anthology support artist venues?
Freshwater Coffee House Anthology
Traditionally, a coffee house is a gathering place where poets and writers present their work for small
audiences of people who share a love for the art form. Since the key element is the art, coffee is optional.
The Freshwater Anthology seeks submissions from any venue where writers read and audiences value
their art. In this regard, a "coffee house" could be a writing class, a "poetry slam," a nightclub, or venue
where caffeinated beverages top the menu.
The owner/convenor of a "coffee house" venue can register their events as a participating site. Local
poets/writers may submit their work through this venue. The venue partner forwards the poem/short story
to the Freshwater site (electronically or by snail mail). Over a period of time, the writing is read
anonymously through other venues by designated readers (in an open mic type performance). Ultimately,
some of these will be selected to be included in a published* anthology. The anthology will be available
through online bookstores and through the coffee houses themselves.
There are several benefits for the supporting venue. First, it potentially rewards local participants by giving
an opportunity for a publishing credit. Second, participating venues will be listed and promoted through the
anthology web page. Finally, the venues will be able to purchase anthologies at a 45% discount. All
proceeds from subsequent sales are meant to support the particular coffee house. (For example, money
can be used to reimburse mileage for guest presenters.) The anthology itself will document regional coffee
houses as part of our literary heritage.
    * Bird Dog Publishing and Drinian Press will provide the final edit and publish
the anthologies in alternating years. They will assume the risk and up-front
costs of publication. They will recoup their expenses through sales of the
anthology. If and when their expenses are recovered, further proceeds will be
applied to programs for writers through the Firelands Writing Center.
